Which Cotswolds Villages Do Day Tours Actually Visit?

Burford and Bibury show up most, Castle Combe and Broadway only on certain tours, and some popular trips don't name their villages at all. Here's what each listing actually commits to.

Every Cotswolds tour seems to use the same photo of honey-colored cottages, but the tours don't all go to the same places. We read the Viator listings for the main day tours from London and noted which villages each one actually names. Here's what they commit to, and what they don't.

The villages, and which tours stop there

Burford

The most common named stop. Day Tours London stops here on its Cotswolds and Oxford day, Rabbies Trail Burners pairs it with Bibury and Oxford, and Premium Tours's coach tour gives you free time in Burford before moving on to Bibury.

Bibury

Bibury appears on Rabbies Trail Burners's small-group Oxford day and on Premium Tours's lunch tour, whose optional two-course lunch is at The Swan Hotel, a former coaching inn. If you take that tour without lunch, the operator suggests buying food in Burford first, since options in Bibury are limited.

Bourton-on-the-Water

Day Tours London gives you about an hour here, then roughly 2.5 hours in Oxford with a walking tour. It's the best-value way on our list to see Bourton and Oxford in one day.

Stow-on-the-Wold and Broadway

The Evan Evans Tours Cotswolds and Blenheim Palace day visits Stow-on-the-Wold. Shakespeare Coaches's tour from Paddington names both Broadway and Stow-on-the-Wold among its stops, with free time to wander, browse and find a café.

Castle Combe

Castle Combe sits at the southern end of the Cotswolds, nearer Bath than Oxford, so it turns up on Bath itineraries rather than Oxford ones. The English Bus visits it on a small-group day that also covers Bath and Stonehenge; Stonehenge tickets are paid on the day.

Bampton

The same Evan Evans Tours Blenheim day includes a guided walk around Bampton, which the listing presents as a Downton Abbey filming location. It doesn't go to Highclere Castle; for that, Brit Movie Tours's small-group Downton tour includes Highclere entry.

Tours that don't name their villages

Some of the best-reviewed tours keep the route flexible. Go Tours UK's small-group day promises a mix of villages, historic towns and countryside on narrow lanes, without naming them. The Evan Evans Tours small-group tour says it visits three villages, and The English Bus's Oxford and Stratford day mentions "characterful Cotswold villages." Listing photos hint at likely stops, but photos aren't promises. If one village is the reason for your trip, message the operator before you book.

That flexibility isn't necessarily bad. A driver-guide in a minibus can skip a village that's overrun with coaches and swap in a quieter one, which is part of why these tours review so well.

And one to avoid if villages are the point: Evan Evans Tours's Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, Cotswolds and Warwick Castle day includes only a panoramic drive through the Cotswolds, with no village stop.

Why public transport is hard

The Cotswolds is a National Landscape (until November 2023, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) covering nearly 800 square miles across parts of several counties. Trains from Paddington reach its edges at stations such as Moreton-in-Marsh and Kemble, but the villages are scattered in between.

Cotswolds Tourism is candid: getting around by public transport "is not always easy," and many smaller villages aren't served at all. Buses link the larger towns, Gloucestershire's bookable Robin minibus covers places like Stow, Bourton and Bibury, and the Heritage Bus runs from Moreton-in-Marsh via Stow, Bourton and Burford, but only on weekends and bank holidays from April to October. Stitching three villages into a day trip from London that way is possible, but slow, with little margin if a connection fails.

Small group or coach?

Group size decides how many villages you can realistically see. The coach tours we checked carry 42 to 53 people, which works for bigger stops like Burford, Bibury and Stow-on-the-Wold. The true small-group tours, including Go Tours UK, Rabbies Trail Burners and The English Bus, cap numbers at 16 and use minibuses that cope with narrow lanes and get in and out of villages faster.

Not every "small group" is small, though. The Evan Evans Tours small-group tour takes up to 25, and Shakespeare Coaches uses a minibus or midibus of up to 33. For a genuinely small group at a fair price, Go Tours UK starts at $114 and is rated 4.85.

Practical details the photos don't show

Lunch is rarely included. Premium Tours sells it as an option, and Shakespeare Coaches suggests bringing a picnic or using the driver's recommendations. Check age limits if you're traveling with kids: Go Tours UK doesn't take children under 7 and Rabbies Trail Burners doesn't take under-5s. Finally, start points vary, from Victoria Coach Station for the big coaches to South Kensington, Gloucester Road and Paddington for some of the smaller operators, so pick one near where you're staying.

How to choose

  • You want Bibury: Rabbies Trail Burners (with Oxford) or Premium Tours (with an optional lunch).
  • You want Castle Combe: The English Bus, paired with Bath and Stonehenge.
  • You want Broadway: Shakespeare Coaches, from Paddington.
  • You want the countryside more than any single village: Go Tours UK.
  • You want Downton Abbey: the Evan Evans Tours Blenheim day for Bampton, or Brit Movie Tours for Highclere.

Compare every option side by side on our Cotswolds tours page. If Oxford is the bigger draw, start with our Oxford tours guide, and if you're adding Bath, see our Bath day trip itinerary.

Quick answers

Which Cotswolds village do day tours from London visit most?

In the listings we checked, Burford is named most often, followed by Bibury. Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Broadway and Castle Combe each appear on one or two tours.

Do Cotswolds day tours go to Castle Combe?

Only some. The English Bus visits Castle Combe on a small-group day that also covers Bath and Stonehenge.

Can I visit Cotswolds villages by train from London?

Trains from Paddington reach Moreton-in-Marsh and Kemble, but Cotswolds Tourism notes that many smaller villages aren't served by public transport, so most visitors on a day trip use a tour or a car.
