Stonehenge Inner Circle Tours: How Stone Circle Access Works (2026)

A regular Stonehenge ticket keeps you on the path. Here's how English Heritage's Stone Circle Experience gets you inside the stones, when it runs, and which tours from London include it.

On a regular Stonehenge ticket you walk a path around the monument: close enough for great photos, never inside the circle. The only way in is English Heritage's Stone Circle Experience, a small, one-hour session held before the site opens or after it closes. You can book one direct or get it as part of a tour from London. Here's how it works, and when it's worth the extra money.

The short version

  • Sessions last one hour, in the early morning or evening, outside normal visiting hours.
  • Each session takes up to 52 people, split into two guided groups of 26.
  • Booked direct, prices start from £70 for adults (18+) and £40 for children aged 5 to 17; under-5s go free.
  • There are no sessions in October or November. Booking is currently open to March 2027.
  • You go inside the circle, but you may not touch or stand on the stones.

What a regular visit gets you

General admission covers the visitor center, the exhibition and the stones. A shuttle runs every few minutes from the visitor center and takes 5 to 10 minutes; walking takes 25 to 40 minutes across fields. At the monument you follow the visitor path around the stones. During normal hours, nobody steps inside the circle.

That's still a good visit. The path gets you close, and most London day tours give you 90 minutes to two hours on site. In the current winter season, Stonehenge is open 9:30am to 5pm with last entry at 3pm. If you're seeing it on the way to Bath, a standard tour is fine; our Stonehenge tours comparison has the options.

How the Stone Circle Experience works

You meet your host at the visitor center and ride the shuttle to the stones; English Heritage asks you to be ready to board 10 minutes before your session. The host splits the session into two groups, and each gets a guided tour inside the circle and of the surrounding landscape, including the Slaughter Stone and the Heel Stone. Take as many photos as you like.

The rules are short: no touching and no standing on the stones. For evening sessions you can enter the visitor center an hour before it closes to day visitors. One London operator warns that access inside the stones can be withdrawn in wet weather, with a guided walk beyond the usual path instead, so pack for rain and keep expectations flexible.

Sunrise, sunset or neither

Sessions fall before opening or after closing, so their clock times shift with the seasons. Depending on the time of year, you may catch sunrise or sunset. In high summer, operators note in their own fine print, the long daylight usually rules that out. Book for the empty circle, not a guaranteed sky.

Morning versus evening is mostly about logistics. From London, a morning session means a very early start. An evening session lets you sleep in, but you'll be back in London late.

Book direct or take a tour?

Book direct if you're driving or staying nearby. It's the cheapest way in, but Salisbury, the nearest rail and bus hub, is 12 miles away, and English Heritage warns that the Stonehenge Tour Bus timetable may not line up with early or late sessions. Without a car, plan a taxi.

Take a tour if you're based in London. The operator holds the session booking and handles the transport, and you get daytime stops to fill the rest of the day. Inner circle tours start around $224, against $75 for a standard Stonehenge and Bath coach day.

Tours from London that include inner circle access

Best all-rounder: Premium Tours pairs a morning or evening session with Lacock and a panoramic tour of Bath, with an optional Roman Baths upgrade. It's rated 4.79 from 2,451 reviews and runs most of the year, with fewer winter dates and none in October or November.

With Windsor: Evan Evans Tours combines inner circle access with Windsor, either a walking tour or castle entry. Its 2026 departures ran only from May to September, so look out for 2027 dates. Windsor Castle itself is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so if castle entry matters, check the day of the week.

Smaller coach, extra sites: The evening tour from Anderson Tours adds Avebury and West Kennet Long Barrow from $210, with a coach capped at 30. It's well reviewed but non-refundable, as all sales are final, so book it only once your dates are fixed.

What about the solstice?

At the solstices, English Heritage opens the stones for free. Summer solstice runs overnight, draws a big crowd and requires pre-booked parking. Winter Solstice 2026 falls on Tuesday, December 22. It's a memorable event, but it's the opposite of the quiet, small-group feel of a Stone Circle Experience.

Visiting in November?

There are no Stone Circle Experience sessions in October or November, and the inner circle tours from London pause too. Take a standard tour now and save the circle for a return trip, or choose dates from December onward. If you're pairing Stonehenge with Bath, our one day in Bath itinerary shows how to use the afternoon, and our Bath day trips page compares the combos.
