Yes, you can do Paris in a day from London, and the Eurostar makes it surprisingly painless: the fastest trains reach Paris in 2 hours 16 minutes, and both passport checks happen before you board at St Pancras. Expect roughly eight hours in Paris on a package, which is enough for an overview, a Seine cruise and one big sight, not for the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower and Montmartre done properly.

For most first-timers the best option is the guided day run by Premium Tours: Eurostar tickets, an escort, a coach tour, a cruise and optional lunch at the Eiffel Tower, from $352 and rated 4.64 across 3,074 reviews. Prefer to roam? An independent rail package or your own Eurostar ticket plus a tour that starts in Paris gives you more freedom.

One warning before you compare: every London-to-Paris package we found is non-refundable once booked. Every price below was checked on Viator on October 20, 2026.

How much of Paris can you see in a day?

Less than the brochures imply, but more than you'd think. The package trains leave St Pancras around 7am, and Paris is an hour ahead, so you arrive mid-morning local time. Return trains usually leave around 7pm or 8pm Paris time. Allow for transfers and that's roughly eight hours in the city.

Realistically, that buys you:

  • An overview: a coach or bus loop past the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs-Élysées and the Eiffel Tower.
  • A Seine cruise: an hour on the river is the most efficient sightseeing in Paris.
  • One big thing done properly: the Louvre, or lunch on the Eiffel Tower, or an afternoon in Montmartre or the Marais. Pick one.

Trying to do the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower summit and Montmartre in one day is how people end up seeing them all through a queue. If you want all three, stay a night.

Guided package or do it yourself?

There are three ways to do this trip, and the right one depends on how much you want to plan.

  • Fully guided package. An escort meets you at St Pancras, rides the train with you and runs the day: coach tour, cruise, free time, back to the station. Premium Tours gives tour-only guests about three hours of free time, and lunch guests up to 90 minutes. Golden Tours Gray Line London packs in Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and Louvre entries, but its 3.67 rating reflects how rushed that feels.
  • Independent rail package. Eurostar tickets plus a Paris extra, and you're on your own. Evan Evans Tours adds a hop-on hop-off bus from $405; Golden Tours Gray Line London is the cheapest we found at $278, with a Metro pass and cruise, though it's rated only 3.41 on 17 reviews.
  • Book it all yourself. Buy Eurostar tickets direct, then add a tour that starts in Paris. This is usually the most flexible option, and it can be cheaper if you book the train early.

For a first visit with limited time, the guided package wins: you don't waste an hour working out the Metro. Our pick handles the logistics and still leaves you a real slice of free time.

Passports, border checks, EES and ETIAS

Bring your passport; there's no Eurostar without one. Both border checks happen at St Pancras before you board, first UK exit, then French entry, so you simply walk off the train in Paris. On the way home it runs in reverse at Gare du Nord.

  • Entry/Exit System (EES). The EU's digital border system has been fully operational since April 10, 2026, according to the European Commission. If you're not an EU citizen, expect your passport to be scanned and your face and fingerprints recorded at border control in London. It's free, and there's nothing to apply for in advance. Eurostar says to arrive at the time shown on your ticket, which allows for these checks.
  • ETIAS. The EU's travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, was not yet in operation when we checked in October 2026, and the EU had not announced a start date. It says it will give several months' notice. Check the official EU ETIAS site before you book, and ignore any site charging you for ETIAS today.
  • Coming back to the UK. Americans and other visa-free visitors need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). It's valid for two years and multiple trips, so the one you used to fly in covers your return from Paris.

Early trains, late trains and timing

  • Early check-in. Packages ask you to check in at St Pancras at 6am on weekdays (5:30am on Saturdays). Ticket gates close 30 minutes before departure, and missing them on a non-refundable package means losing the whole day.
  • Late return. Evan Evans Tours's return train leaves Paris at 8:13pm and reaches St Pancras at 9:39pm London time. Book nothing for that evening.
  • Tuesdays. The Louvre is closed on Tuesdays. Several packages swap in a cruise or the Musée d'Orsay that day, so check before you book.
  • Booking your own trains. Eurostar's cheapest Standard fares go first. Standard tickets can be exchanged without a fee up to an hour before departure (you pay any fare difference), which is far more forgiving than a package.

Doing it yourself? Walks - France's walking tours start in Paris, with a four-hour half-day including the Louvre and a five-hour version with a cruise. Both fit between a morning and an evening train, and both cancel free up to 24 hours out.

An early check-in is much easier if you sleep a short walk from St Pancras. King's Cross and Bloomsbury are the obvious bases.

What to skip

  • Booking your own Louvre time slot on a guided package. Premium Tours advises against it, because traffic decides when you arrive.
  • The all-entries package if you hate rushing. Three ticketed sights in one day means a lot of fast walking and queuing.
  • Plus class for the sake of it. The upgrade buys extra legroom and a light meal on a two-hour ride. It's pleasant, not essential.
  • A day trip at all, if Paris is the highlight of your trip. One night changes everything: an evening on the river and a slow morning in a café. Our day trips guide covers easier options closer to London, and our day trips by train page covers the rest of the rail map.
