The Tower of London is the one London sight where a tour genuinely changes your visit, and not because you need help finding the Crown Jewels. Standard admission already includes the jewels and the famous Yeoman Warder (Beefeater) tours. What you pay a tour operator for is timing: getting through the gates before the public, so the Jewel House queue never becomes your problem.
Short version: on a quiet winter weekday, arrive at opening with the official ticket ($51) and walk straight to the Crown Jewels. On a busy date, or if you want to see the Opening Ceremony, book an early-access tour. If you want the stories without the effort, a guided tour with a Beefeater meet-and-greet is the sweet spot.
Below: every format compared, how to time your visit, and the one Tower experience you can't buy on Viator, the Ceremony of the Keys.

- The Tower itself rates 4.6 on TripAdvisor and 4.7 on Google from about 70,000 and 120,000 reviews. The standard ticket rates 4.42 on Viator.
- Guided early-access tours score at or above the Tower itself. LetzGo's VIP opening-ceremony tour rates 4.76 on Viator, 4.6 on TripAdvisor and 4.9 on Google, though its Google profile covers the whole company.
- Operators' own sites show the highest figures: The Tour Guy publishes 4.95 from 3,219 London reviews, compared with 4.8 on TripAdvisor and 4.79 on Viator.
- Every guided tour here caps groups at 20–27 people. That matters because guides can't talk inside the White Tower or the Jewel House.
Spread is the gap between the highest and lowest rating we could verify. “Not verified” means we couldn’t confirm a listing and count for that platform.
What your ticket already includes
Before you pay for a tour, know what the standard ticket covers: the Crown Jewels in the Jewel House, the White Tower and its armor collections, the wall walks, and the Yeoman Warder tours. The Beefeater tours start near the main entrance through the day and can't be reserved; Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) says they may be adapted or cancelled in bad weather or when crowds are large.
Two rules shape every tour on this page. Guiding isn't allowed inside the White Tower or the Jewel House, so even on the priciest VIP tour you see the Crown Jewels on your own. And there's no re-entry: once you leave, you're out. A tour's real value is timing and access, not commentary in front of the crowns.
If you're happy to explore independently and can be at the gate when it opens, HRP's own ticket is the smart buy.
Why early access is worth paying for
The Jewel House is the bottleneck. HRP says Crown Jewels queues can reach 90 minutes on very busy days and that there's no fast-track entry, so "skip-the-line" on a Tower ticket means skipping the ticket line, not the Jewel House line. Early-access tours are the only way to be inside before the public.
The best ones include the Opening Ceremony, when the Yeoman Warders unlock the fortress for the day. City Wonders UK's version is short (1 hour) and leaves you free to stay all day with an audio app. LetzGo City Tours's pricier tour adds a private welcome from the Chief Beefeater and Tower Bridge afterward. Our Crown Jewels queue guide covers the timing in detail.
One caveat for winter trips: HRP's own Opening Ceremony package was listed only through November 1, 2026 when we checked. Operators' early-access tours still appeared in Viator's November search results, but confirm your exact date shows availability before you build a morning around it.
Guided tour or ticket only?
Go ticket-only if you can arrive at opening, are comfortable reading signs, and plan to join a free Yeoman Warder tour. That's most adults, most of the time, especially in November, early December and January weekdays, which HRP names as its quietest period.
Book a guided tour if you want the stories without the legwork or you're visiting on a busy date. The best value is The Tour Guy's two-hour tour ($90), with timed entry and a private 15-minute meet-and-greet with a Yeoman Warder in the King's House, an area closed to the public. LetzGo City Tours's 3 hours version goes deeper and includes a private Beefeater audience. Skip private tours unless you're a family or a group splitting the cost: they don't get you into the Jewel House any faster.
Tower Bridge, Thames and full-day combos
The Tower pairs naturally with Tower Bridge next door and with a river trip west to Westminster. The cleanest combo is LetzGo City Tours's early-access tour, which takes you from the Opening Ceremony and the Crown Jewels to Tower Bridge's high-level walkways and Engine Rooms in 3 hours 30 minutes.
With one day for all of royal London, the London-in-a-day tours from Walks - UK and The Tour Guy bundle Westminster Abbey, a Thames boat and the Tower with the Crown Jewels. They're long (6–8 hours and 7 hours) and on standard departures the Tower comes last, in the afternoon. For the Westminster half, see our Westminster tours guide; for boats on their own, see Thames cruises.
Winter hours, timing and the Ceremony of the Keys
From November through February the Tower opens at 9am Tuesday to Saturday and 10am on Sundays and Mondays, closing at 4:30pm, and it's shut December 24–26 and January 1. That makes Tuesday to Saturday the better days for an independent early start. HRP's advice is to head to the Jewel House first and allow at least two hours overall.
The Ceremony of the Keys, the nightly locking-up of the Tower at 9:30pm, is not a Viator product. Tickets are sold only on HRP's website, released monthly, non-refundable and quick to sell out, and HRP says bookings made by tour operators or third parties will be cancelled. If a reseller offers Keys tickets, walk away.
Visiting in December? HRP lists a Christmas at the Tower program from late November into early January, included in admission; pair it with our Christmas in London guide.
The Tower with kids
This is one of London's best sights for children, and the free Yeoman Warder tour is the highlight for most of them: loud, gory and funny. Do the Crown Jewels first while attention spans are fresh, then join a Beefeater tour. Strollers aren't allowed in the White Tower and there's no luggage storage, so bring a carrier for little ones.
For a shorter guided option, The Tour Guy's storytelling tour runs 90 minutes. For younger kids who need a guide pitched at their level, Pinocchio Tours runs private family tours with a Blue Badge guide; it's expensive, but every question gets answered.

Frequently asked questions
Are Yeoman Warder (Beefeater) tours included in the Tower of London ticket?
Yes. Historic Royal Palaces includes the Yeoman Warder tours in standard admission. They start near the main entrance at intervals through the day, can't be booked in advance, and may be adapted or cancelled in bad weather or when crowds are large.
Is a Tower of London early access tour worth it?
It is if you're visiting on a busy date, want to see the Opening Ceremony, or only have one morning. Historic Royal Palaces says Crown Jewels queues can reach 90 minutes on very busy days and there's no fast-track entry. On a quiet winter weekday, arriving at opening with a regular ticket works well.
Can a tour guide take me through the Crown Jewels?
No. Guiding isn't permitted inside the Jewel House or the White Tower, so every visitor, including VIP tour groups, sees the Crown Jewels independently. Guides brief you beforehand and meet you afterward.
How do I get tickets for the Ceremony of the Keys?
Only through the Historic Royal Palaces website. Tickets are released monthly, sell out quickly and are non-refundable, and HRP cancels bookings made by tour operators or third parties. The ceremony starts at 9:30pm and it isn't sold on Viator.
What are the Tower of London opening hours in winter?
From November to February the Tower opens 9am to 4:30pm Tuesday to Saturday and 10am to 4:30pm on Sundays and Mondays. It is closed December 24, 25 and 26 and January 1. Check the Historic Royal Palaces website before you go.
How long do you need at the Tower of London?
Historic Royal Palaces suggests at least two hours, including the Crown Jewels. Add time for a Yeoman Warder tour and the White Tower, and note there is no re-entry once you leave.
Can I combine the Tower of London with Tower Bridge?
Yes. They're next door to each other. LetzGo City Tours's early-access tour includes the Opening Ceremony, the Crown Jewels and timed entry to Tower Bridge in 3 hours 30 minutes, or you can visit the bridge separately after your Tower ticket.
