London's Christmas season runs from early November into the new year. Covent Garden switches on its lights on Thursday, November 12, 2026, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland opens November 19, and the big rinks and light trails run into January. The easiest way to see the West End displays in one evening is a guided lights tour after dark: by bus if you want warmth and speed, on foot if you want the side streets and a mulled wine.
Below we compare the bookable lights tours and festive cruises on price, format and cancellation terms, then list the markets and winter events worth your evening, with 2026 dates only where they've been officially published.
One planning rule before anything else: on Christmas Day, TfL runs no service on most of London's public transport, and many big attractions close for some or all of December 24–26. Build your trip around that.
From-prices are per person in USD as listed on Viator on October 19, 2026, and vary by date and option. Links open Viator, where availability and cancellation terms are shown before you pay.
When the Christmas lights switch on in 2026
Covent Garden has confirmed its date: its official site lists the lights switch-on for Thursday, November 12, 2026, with more than 300,000 lights, the gold bells, mirror balls and baubles back on the Market Building and a British-grown tree on the West Piazza.
Oxford Street says Harry Potter is "lighting up Oxford Street this Christmas" through a partnership with HBO Max, but it hadn't published a switch-on date when we checked on October 19. Regent Street, which meets it at Oxford Circus, hadn't posted 2026 details either. Both are traditionally lit in November; check their official sites if you want the switch-on event itself.
The Trafalgar Square tree is a gift from Norway, sent every year since 1947 and lit at a ceremony in December. Carol groups sing at its base throughout the month, according to the Mayor of London.
You don't need a switch-on night: once lit, the displays are on every evening. Weeknights are calmer than weekends, and a guided tour strings together Regent Street, Oxford Street, Piccadilly Circus, the Strand and Trafalgar Square in about 90 minutes.
Bus. The most ground in the least time, and the best choice with kids or in cold rain. Golden Tours Gray Line London runs 90 minutes with a live guide and a warm lower deck, but no stops and no toilet. Premium Tours' vintage double-decker leaves at 4pm and 7pm, though an upper-deck seat isn't guaranteed.
Walking. Slower, but you get the lanes, markets and stories. The mulled-wine walk from Covent Garden caps groups at 10 and is adults only; the silent-disco walk pipes Christmas songs through headsets on a loop from Fitzrovia; Love London Tours uses a qualified London guide on a two-hour route.
Black cab. Private, picks up from central London hotels and runs about 2.5 hours. At $374 for the cab (up to six people) it's the splurge, but it's the most comfortable option for limited mobility, and it gets more reasonable split across a family.
Want a story rather than lights? The Richards Tours Christmas Carol walk follows Scrooge's London through hidden courts and alleys, with a stop at one of the city's oldest pubs, a Dickens haunt.
Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is the giant: rides, shows, ice sculptures, food and what it bills as the UK's largest open-air ice rink. It runs November 19, 2026 to January 3, 2027, every day except Christmas Day. Entry is ticketed; booking online in advance saves up to 25%, and popular dates sell out.
For something calmer, the Southbank Centre Winter Market lines the Queen's Walk with Alpine-style chalets, street food and mulled wine from November 2, 2026 to January 4, 2027 (closed December 25 and 31). Skate at Somerset House returns November 11, 2026 to January 10, 2027 under a 40-foot tree, and Christmas at Kew's after-dark light trail runs on selected dates from November 13. Book both ahead.
On December 25, TfL runs no service on most of its network; in practice that means no Tube and no buses. In its festive guidance TfL says Santander Cycles, rental e-scooters, Victoria Coach Station, Dial-a-Ride, taxis and private hire keep running on Christmas Day. Services also finish early on Christmas Eve, and some lines are reduced or closed on Boxing Day. TfL publishes each year's details on its website in December.
Large shops in England must close on Christmas Day by law. Many attractions close for longer: the National Gallery and the British Museum shut December 24–26, and Historic Royal Palaces lists the Tower of London as closed on those three days too. Winter Wonderland, Christmas at Kew, Skate at Somerset House and the Southbank market all close on Christmas Day.
If you're in London on the 25th, book Christmas lunch well ahead, walk the lit streets in daylight and plan to get around on foot, by bike or by taxi.
