What a Thames dinner cruise really includes: courses, drinks, entertainment, dress code, boarding times and refund rules for the main London options, side by side.

A Thames dinner cruise sounds simple: dinner, on a boat, with London sliding past the window. In practice the options differ a lot in what's in the price, how long you're on board and how strict the cancellation rules are. We compared the main bookable cruises using the operators' own details, so you know exactly what you're paying for.

The short version

  • Classic night out: the 3-hour dinner cruise from City Cruises, round trip from Westminster Pier, from $94. Welcome drink, three courses, a live performer and dancing.
  • Jazz instead of a party: the same operator's Dinner and Jazz Cruise, from $148, with a live jazz quintet. It rates lower, at 3.84.
  • Smaller boat, higher rating: Tea on the Thames from Butler's Wharf Pier by Tower Bridge, with a two-course dinner and live music. The from-price of $75 covers its cheapest option, so check the dinner price when you book.
  • Drinks, not dinner: a 2-hour evening cruise with a glass of sparkling wine and canapés, from $43.

What's actually included

City Cruises dinner cruise

The price covers a pre-cruise glass of sparkling wine or a soft drink, a three-course dinner from a set menu, and live entertainment with dancing. Other drinks are extra. A vegetarian option is available if you request it when booking, and other dietary requirements need 72 hours' notice: the operator says it can't cater for them on the day. There's no commentary on board, though City Experiences' app offers multilingual commentary if you want to know what you're passing.

The VIP upgrade adds front-of-boat seating, a welcome glass of Champagne, five canapés before your starter, and a cheeseboard with dessert wine. Guests must be 13 or older.

Dinner and Jazz Cruise

Also three hours, round trip from Westminster Pier, with a welcome glass of sparkling wine, three courses and a live jazz quintet. The listing describes a route past the National Theatre, the Oxo Tower, Shakespeare's Globe, Tate Modern, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. Drinks beyond the welcome glass are extra, the minimum age is 13, and you must be 18 to drink.

Tea on the Thames dinner

A smaller operation boarding at Butler's Wharf Pier, on the south bank just past Tower Bridge. Dinner is a two-course meal of English staples with dessert and soft live music, and drinks are sold on board. The dinner option is adults only, the largest tables seat eight, and dietary requests need 72 hours' notice (kosher isn't available). The boat has no lift, so wheelchair access may be difficult.

Its 4.91 rating is the best of the group, but it comes from just 44 reviews, against 2,036 for the City Cruises dinner. Treat it as promising rather than proven.

Evening cruise with sparkling wine

Not a dinner at all: two hours on the Westminster–Greenwich stretch from Tower Pier, with a glass of sparkling wine or a soft drink and a selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian canapés. It's the smart pick if you'd rather eat at a proper restaurant before or after. Minimum age is 13.

Dress code

City Cruises' own dinner cruise page asks for smart casual and specifically advises against flip-flops, leisurewear and ripped jeans. Its listings for the jazz and evening cruises also say smart casual. Tea on the Thames' listing doesn't state a dress code, so smart casual is the safe default there too.

In practice that means a collared shirt or a nice top, dark jeans or chinos, and a warm layer for the pier, because the river is cold after dark from autumn onward. For London's stricter dress codes, see our afternoon tea dress code guide.

Timing and boarding

City Cruises asks you to arrive 20 minutes before departure, when boarding begins and you're shown to an allocated table. Tables are fixed and close together; the operator says its panoramic windows give views from every table, and its own site notes that window tables for two sell out, so book early if that matters to you. Tea on the Thames asks guests to arrive 15 minutes before departure.

From November, all of these sail in darkness, which is the point: Parliament, St Paul's and Tower Bridge lit up. In December, pair your cruise with the lights and stalls in our London Christmas markets guide or the wider Christmas in London hub.

Cancellation rules

The City Cruises dinner, jazz and evening cruises refund in full only if you cancel at least three days ahead; inside that window you get nothing back. Tea on the Thames refunds in full up to 24 hours before departure. If your plans aren't fixed, that alone may decide it.

Is a dinner cruise worth it?

Book one if the occasion is the point: an anniversary, a birthday, a last night in London. If you mainly want the views, know that the big dinner cruise rates 4.13, while the one-hour daytime Westminster–Greenwich sightseeing boat rates 4.61 and starts at $23. A daytime cruise plus a good restaurant ashore is often the better night.
