Brighton is the easiest seaside day out from London, and the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs are the reason to make it a full day instead of a stroll along the seafront. The catch is that the cliffs are not in Brighton. They sit a bus ride or a short drive east, so the real question is how you get there. Your choice is a guided coach, a small-group minibus (with or without a train ticket bundled in), or the train and your own legs.
The coach day from Golden Tours Gray Line London is the simplest from central London, priced from $102 and running about 10 hours 30 minutes. The small-group day from Fast Trackers Tours Ltd puts you on the train to Brighton and then in a minibus capped at 16, from $121, and it is the better-reviewed of the two: 4.93 from 769 reviews. If you are already going to Brighton by train, Fast Trackers Tours Ltd runs the same cliffs-and-downs route from the city itself, from $88.
All tour figures were checked on Viator on October 28, 2026. Train times, Royal Pavilion hours and cliff-safety advice below come from the official sources listed on this page's last-updated date, and anything we could not confirm is marked as "check the official site".

Tour or train?
Take the train if Brighton itself is the plan. National Rail lists London to Brighton at around 58 minutes, with direct trains from London Victoria, London Bridge or London St Pancras (some journeys take longer and may involve a change). You get the seafront, the Pavilion and the Lanes at your own pace, and you can stay for dinner. The Seven Sisters are the awkward part: they are a separate trip, and in winter the daylight and the bus timetable limit how much you can fit in.
Take a tour if the cliffs are the reason you are going. A guided day solves the transport problem and puts you on the clifftop path with someone who knows where the viewpoints are. The trade-off is time in Brighton: on the coach day you get free time on the seafront, not a full afternoon in town.
The hybrid is the one we would book. Fast Trackers Tours Ltd bundles return train tickets from London with a minibus tour, so you skip the coach but also skip the bus timetable. It meets at London Bridge Station at 8:45 and runs about 9 hours 30 minutes. If you would rather do Brighton alone and the cliffs on a second day, the same operator's half-day from Brighton, 6 hours 30 minutes in the minibus, is the self-built version.

Brighton and Seven Sisters tours
Three guided options cover the realistic ways to do it. All three are rated by Viator travelers and offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.
Train and minibus: the small-group day
This is the best-reviewed choice, with 4.93 from 769 reviews. You meet your guide at London Bridge Station, take the train to Brighton (tickets are included) and then transfer to a luxury minibus for a day of stops across the South Downs National Park and along the Seven Sisters cliffs. Groups are capped at 16, National Park fees, bottled water, tea and coffee are included, and hotel pickup is not. Expect real walking on grass paths, and bring shoes you do not mind getting muddy.
Coach from Victoria: the one-ticket day
The Golden Tours Gray Line London coach leaves from a departure point on Bulleid Way, next to Victoria Station, and returns to Victoria. The day takes in the Seven Sisters cliffs, Birling Gap and a view of Belle Tout Lighthouse, then free time on Brighton's seafront. Royal Pavilion entry is an option rather than part of the base ticket, and a Signature option adds all entries, premium seating and a lunch pack. The ticket can be bought in English or Chinese. It is a bigger group (up to 50) and the lowest review count of the three, so treat it as the simple, budget-friendly pick rather than the connoisseur's.
From Brighton: the cliffs and downs by minibus
If you are staying in Brighton, or you are traveling by train and want the cliffs sorted, Fast Trackers Tours Ltd runs a small-group minibus tour from the Leonardo Hotel on Stroudley Road. It covers the South Downs and the Seven Sisters with live commentary, National Park fees, bottled water and a coffee at Middle Farm. It is rated 4.95 from 537 reviews and takes about 6 hours 30 minutes. It does not include transport from London, so pair it with a train ticket.
By train: stations and journey times
You have three direct options from central London. National Rail says you can travel directly from London Victoria, London Bridge or London St Pancras, and lists the trip at about 58 minutes, with a note that some journeys take longer. Gatwick Express, which serves Victoria, describes Brighton as around an hour from London. Allow somewhat longer on weekends and during engineering works.
- Victoria: the most central station for the West End and Westminster hotels.
- London Bridge: convenient for the South Bank and the City. The small-group Seven Sisters tour meets here.
- St Pancras: useful if you are already near King's Cross, though check that your service is direct.
Check live times and fares at nationalrail.co.uk before you travel. We have not verified fares or last trains, so do not assume a late-evening departure: look up the last direct train back before you settle in for dinner. Booking an Advance ticket or traveling off-peak is usually cheaper than buying on the day; our day trips by train guide explains ticket types and railcards.
From Brighton station, the seafront is a short walk downhill. The Royal Pavilion and the Lanes sit between the station and the sea, so you can see most of the center on foot.
What to see in Brighton in a day
If you only have a few hours between trains or tour stops, this is the order we would walk it.
- The Royal Pavilion. Brighton's seaside palace is the building that makes the city look like nowhere else in England: Viator describes its Indo-Saracenic architecture, all domes and minarets. Winter hours (October to March) are 10am to 5.15pm, with last admission at 4.30pm. Standard adult admission is £21.50, with a 5% discount for booking online. It is closed all day on November 18, 2026 for a private event, and all day on December 25 and 26, 2026 and January 1, 2027. Check the Brighton Museums page for Christmas Eve and any other changes.
- The Lanes. The tight old streets between the Pavilion and the sea are where the independent shops, jewelers, cafes and pubs cluster. Wander without a plan; it is a small area and easy to cover in an hour.
- Brighton Palace Pier. The classic seafront walk. Check the pier's own site for hours and ride prices before you go, as we have not verified them.
- The seafront. Walk the promenade and the pebble beach whatever the season. In winter it is a bracing, uncrowded version of the summer scene.
With a full day on your own, the Pavilion in the morning, lunch in the Lanes and the pier and beach in the afternoon is a comfortable loop. If you also want the cliffs, you will need to start early or book a tour.
Seven Sisters: getting there and safety near cliff edges
The Seven Sisters are a line of chalk cliffs in Seven Sisters Country Park, east of Brighton and near Seaford. The classic view looks along the cliffs from Seaford Head, and Birling Gap puts you right beside them.
By bus. The 12, 12A and 12X Coaster buses run between Brighton, Seaford and Eastbourne, and the park says all buses stop at the Visitor Centre and connect with mainline stations at Seaford, Brighton and Eastbourne. The 39 Sussex Arts Shuttle runs between Lewes and Eastbourne on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and the 47 Cuckmere Valley Rambler runs only between April and October at weekends and on bank holidays. Check current timetables, because services change.
By car. There are two pay-and-display car parks (the park's postcode is BN25 4AD). The park warns that they fill quickly at peak times and that there is very limited alternative parking nearby. From October 24, winter hours apply: toilets and car parks open 7am to 6pm, and the car parks are locked at 6pm, so do not leave a car there after dark. The Visitor Centre is open 10am to 4pm.
Cliff safety. These are active chalk cliffs and the edges are not fenced. The park's advice is short and worth following:
- Stick to the path.
- Stay at least 5 meters (about 16 feet) away from the cliff edge and base.
- Admire the cliffs from a safe distance.
- Always check the weather forecast and tide times.
Wind and wet grass make clifftop paths harder in winter, so go slowly. Read the park's official site for current conditions and any closures before you go.
Brighton in winter
Brighton works as a winter day trip because most of what you will do is indoors or short and walkable. The Royal Pavilion runs its winter hours (10am to 5.15pm, last admission 4.30pm), the Lanes have cafes and pubs to duck into, and a seafront walk is easier without summer crowds. Plan for an early finish: winter days are short, so treat mid-afternoon as the end of your outdoor time and use the evening for dinner.
For the cliffs, winter is more about preparation than a reason to skip them. The tours operate in all weather, per the operator, so dress for wind and rain and wear sturdy shoes. If you are driving, remember the car parks lock at 6pm. Viator lists a moderate level of physical fitness for these tours, so expect real walking.
A good winter plan is the small-group tour in the morning and early afternoon, then an hour in the Lanes before the train back. Combine it with other cold-weather ideas from our day trips from London guide, or look at Leeds Castle and Canterbury for a castle day in Kent. Before you travel, check the Royal Pavilion's closure dates, including November 18, 2026 and the Christmas and New Year closures.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
How long is the train from London to Brighton?
National Rail lists London to Brighton at about 58 minutes, with direct trains from London Victoria, London Bridge and London St Pancras. Some journeys take longer or involve a change, so check live times before you travel.
Can you see the Seven Sisters on a Brighton day trip?
Yes, on a tour. The cliffs are east of Brighton in Seven Sisters Country Park, so they are a separate leg from the city. The guided day trips from London and from Brighton on this page include them, with walking along the clifftop paths.
Is Brighton worth visiting in winter?
Yes, if you plan around the daylight. The Royal Pavilion stays open on winter hours (10am to 5.15pm, last admission 4.30pm), the Lanes have indoor stops, and the seafront is quiet. Check the Pavilion for closure dates, including November 18 and the Christmas period.
What is there to do in Brighton for a day?
The Royal Pavilion, the Lanes, Brighton Palace Pier and a seafront walk fill a day comfortably on foot. Add the Seven Sisters cliffs with a guided tour if you want a full day out.
Do I need a tour for the Seven Sisters?
No, but it helps. You can reach Seven Sisters Country Park by Coaster bus from Brighton or by car, though services and parking are limited and change by season. A tour handles the transport and stops at the viewpoints, which matters most in winter when daylight is short.
How close can I get to the cliff edge?
Seven Sisters Country Park advises staying on the path and at least 5 meters (about 16 feet) away from the cliff edge and base. Check the weather forecast and tide times before you go.
