Yes, you can see Warwick Castle in a day from London, and there are two sensible ways to do it. A guided coach day from Victoria usually wraps the castle into a loop with Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford. Or you can take a direct train and buy a ticket straight from the castle, which gives you far more time inside the walls.
The choice comes down to how much of the castle you want. The coach tours we compared are 10.5-hour days that split your time between three places, so the castle gets a share of the middle of the day rather than the whole of it. The train works for people who came for the castle itself, and it is the better option if you want to catch a show, climb a tower and still have time to spare.
Below we compare the three tours, explain how the train and direct tickets work, and cover what changes in winter, when the castle runs its Christmas programme. Every tour was checked on Viator on October 28, 2026, for dates between December 1 and December 20.

Tour or train? How the two options compare
Be clear about what you are buying. A coach tour is a sightseeing loop that happens to include Warwick Castle. Entry to the castle and to Shakespeare's Birthplace in Stratford comes only on the "including entries" options, and there is also a walking tour of Oxford and a drive through the Cotswolds. The train is a different trip entirely: you, the castle and most of the day.
- Take a tour if you want three places in one go, you don't want to plan connections, or Oxford and Shakespeare matter as much as the castle. The coach, guide and Oxford walk are all part of the price.
- Take the train if the castle is the point. You pay the castle's own ticket price, choose your own hours, and can stay for the afternoon shows and the grounds instead of leaving on a coach schedule.
The tours cost from $107 for the cheapest option, which is usually the one without entries. Compare that with the castle's own one-day ticket, which starts at £26 booked in advance, and a return train fare, and you can see what the tour is selling: the coach, the guiding and the other two stops, not a cheaper way into the castle. If you just want the castle, the train wins on both time and, for most people, cost.
Best Warwick Castle day tours from London
All three tours share a shape. They are 10.5 hours days by coach, they run in a group of up to 53, and each one points you at Warwick Castle, Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford. Where they differ is in the details, so here is what we found on Viator.
Evan Evans Tours's custom day trip is the top rated of the three, at 4.67 from 943 reviews, from $107. It leaves from Victoria Coach Station and comes with a guide, a personal audio headset and a coach with Wi-Fi and USB charging. The "including entries" option covers Warwick Castle and Shakespeare's Birthplace. The Cotswolds part is a panoramic drive with no stop, and Viator notes the order of stops can change for operational reasons.
The same operator's older listing, Evan Evans Tours's Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, Cotswolds and Warwick Castle day, is the most reviewed, with 3,117 reviews and a rating of 4.46. It sells the same entries and the same drive-through Cotswolds, from $107. It is the safe pick if you want the volume of reviews behind the booking, though the lower score suggests more mixed experiences.
The Golden Tours version
Golden Tours Gray Line London runs a different version rated 4.58 from 920 reviews, from $107. It offers castle-only entry, entry to both attractions, or none, and it is the only one with Italian and Mandarin guiding. The listing also describes a "Signature" option with premium seating and a lunch pack, and a meet-and-greet at Warwick Castle. It meets at Bulleid Way near Victoria rather than at the coach station, so read the voucher closely. It also notes that Shakespeare's Birthplace is closed on Christmas Eve.
None of the three gives a departure time in the listing, so confirm it in your booking. If villages are what you want from the Cotswolds, none of these is the right tour: our Cotswolds tours guide compares days that actually stop in villages, and the Oxford guide covers days with more time in the city.
Warwick Castle by train from London
The castle says a direct service runs from London Marylebone to Warwick in 1 hour 45 minutes. Warwick Railway Station is about one mile from the castle, and the castle suggests allowing 15 minutes to walk it. That puts a realistic door-to-door journey at around two hours each way, so you can arrive for opening and still have a full day.
We couldn't confirm a timetable or fares from the National Rail and Chiltern Railways pages we checked, so look up current departures and advance fares on National Rail before you decide. Trains and walking routes change, and a Sunday or engineering-works timetable can look very different from a weekday one.
A few things make the train day work:
- Book the castle ticket in advance. The castle's own advice is to pre-book to guarantee entry.
- Walk from the station. The castle puts the mile at about 15 minutes on foot.
- Allow time for the return. The last convenient train matters more than the last castle entry.
Our day trips by train guide covers fares, railcards and the other places you can reach without a tour.
Tickets: buying direct versus entry on a tour
Warwick Castle's One-Day Entry starts at £26 when booked in advance and costs £39 on the day. It covers the castle, the live shows and attractions, and a "Rainy Day Promise". A Family One-Day Entry starts at £86 for families of three to five, with a maximum of two adults aged 16 or over. Children under 2 get free castle entry. The castle says to pre-book to guarantee entry.
Those are the castle's own figures. Add-ons cost extra: the Castle Dungeon carries an additional charge and is recommended for ages 10 and over.
On a tour, the choice is built into the booking. Pick an "including entries" option and the castle and Shakespeare's Birthplace tickets are already paid for. Pick an option without entries and you pay the castle yourself, which keeps the tour price lowest. If you want the castle, book the entries option so you aren't buying a second ticket on top of the coach fare.
Viator's standard terms on all three tours give a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure.
What to see at Warwick Castle
On a coach day you may only get a few hours here, so decide what matters before you arrive. These are the highlights the castle itself lists.
- The Great Hall and State Rooms. The Great Hall dates from the 14th century, was rebuilt in the 17th and restored in 1871 after a fire. The State Rooms run through a dining room built in 1763 to a Blue Boudoir with waxworks of Henry VIII and his six wives. Guided tours are included in admission.
- Towers and ramparts. You can climb to the top of Guy's Tower for the view.
- The grounds. The Peacock Garden has topiary and a central fountain, and the Pageant Field runs along the river with sweeping views of the castle, which is where the best photos are taken. The Mill and Engine House shows technology dating from the 14th century.
- Shows. The daily shows are included in your ticket. The Falconer's Quest bird of prey display and the Legend of the Trebuchet are both advertised for the season that ends on November 1, 2026, so don't plan a December visit around either one. Zog Playland and the Horrible Histories Maze are listed as open daily, weather permitting, and History Talks with an expert historian are free.
With a few hours, pick the Great Hall and State Rooms and one tower climb, then walk the grounds. With a whole day by train, add the shows and the Dungeon if the age is right for your group.
Winter and Christmas opening
Warwick Castle stays open into the winter and runs Christmas at the Castle from November 21, 2026, to January 3, 2027. The castle's Christmas page lists no closed days, but the opening-hours table on the site loads dynamically, so check the official opening hours for your date before you go.
- Hours: on the Christmas page, castle access runs from 10am to 4pm, and bundled tickets have last entry at 3pm. The site's banner showed 10am to 5pm on the day we checked, so a coach day that reaches the castle in the afternoon has less time than you might think.
- Prices: castle entry starts from £18 in the Christmas period. Open-air ice skating starts from £8 for a 45-minute slot, and the evening Light Trail from £17 for 45 minutes. Stories with Santa starts from £29 and includes castle entry. The Light Trail runs as darkness falls, which a coach tour will almost certainly miss.
- Early closures: the Great Hall and State Rooms close at 3pm on November 24 and December 9 for weddings. Closures can change, so check the castle's closures page or app.
If you want the Christmas extras, the train is the better way to go, because you can stay until dark. If you are comparing castles, Windsor is a much shorter trip from London, and our Windsor Castle guide sets out the options. Warwick Castle or Windsor Castle?
Windsor is far closer to London and easy by train, and it is still a royal residence. Warwick is a longer trip but is built around live shows, towers to climb and a Christmas programme. If time is tight, choose Windsor; if you want a full castle day out and have most of a day, choose Warwick.
