If you can plan three weeks out, start with Sky Garden. Entry is free, booked on its own website, and the tickets come out every Monday morning for the week three weeks ahead. You get a glass-domed garden at the top of 20 Fenchurch Street (the "Walkie-Talkie") with views across the City, the Tower and The Shard. Book on skygarden.london.
Pay for The View from The Shard when you want real height, an open-air deck and no time limit. Its Level 72 skydeck is the highest open-air viewing platform in London, according to The Shard, and a Standard ticket starts from £28 for ages 13 and up on the official site. You can stay until closing, and the Shard's View Guarantee gives you a free return if bad weather spoils the view.
Below we compare the two, explain how the free Sky Garden release works, and cover the paid Sky Garden breakfast tickets and Shard tickets sold on Viator. The official rules and prices are from skygarden.london and theviewfromtheshard.com, checked November 3, 2026, and the Viator products were checked the same day.

Sky Garden vs The Shard at a glance
The two viewpoints face each other across the Thames, Sky Garden in the City and The Shard by London Bridge station, and they suit different trips.
- Price. Sky Garden is free if you book ahead. The Shard's Standard ticket starts from £28 for ages 13 and up, children aged 4 to 12 start from £10, and under-4s go free (official prices, checked November 3, 2026; prices vary by day and time).
- Height. Sky Garden's lift takes you to Level 35. The Shard's indoor galleries are on Levels 68 and 69, with an open-air skydeck on Level 72. Neither site gives a consistent height in feet, so we haven't quoted one.
- Booking window. Sky Garden releases free tickets every Monday morning, three weeks ahead, for the whole week. The Shard sells timed tickets online, and you can enter up to 15 minutes after the time on your ticket.
- Time inside. Sky Garden's public tickets are valid for an hour. At The Shard there is no time limit: stay until closing.
- Hours. Sky Garden ticket holders can visit 10am–6pm on weekdays and 11am–9pm on weekends and bank holidays. The Shard's hours change through the year, so check its calendar for your date; last entry is one hour before closing.
- What you see. From Sky Garden you look across to The Shard, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. From The Shard you look down on all of it from Level 72, more than twice as many floors up.
Our short answer: if a free Sky Garden slot fits your dates, take it. If it doesn't, or you want the highest view in town with time to linger, pay for The Shard.
How Sky Garden free tickets work
Sky Garden is a public garden at the top of an office tower, and the free entry is real: you book a timed slot on skygarden.london and pay nothing. The catch is availability.
- Release schedule. Free tickets come out every Monday morning (except bank holidays), three weeks in advance, for that whole week. If you're traveling on a Saturday in mid-December, check the site on the Monday three weeks before.
- One hour inside. Public tickets are valid for an hour. That's enough to circle the garden, see the view from each side and take your photos.
- Date changes. Check the date on your ticket before you go; Sky Garden says dates can't be changed on the day.
- Children. Under-16s must be with an adult aged 18 or over, and one adult can bring up to three children.
- ID. Sky Garden runs a Challenge 25 policy: if you're over 18 but look under 25, bring a passport, photo driver's license or PASS card. Physical ID is required for evening walk-ins.
- Security. Everyone is screened on arrival, and the venue can refuse entry.
- The terrace. The outdoor terrace opens 10am–6pm on weekdays and 11am–6pm on weekends, and security can close it without notice in bad weather.
No ticket? Try walking in. Sky Garden says it accepts free walk-ins daily during public hours, subject to availability; ask the team at the door. It also sells paid early morning tickets at the door from £12.50 a person, and evening tickets at £15.50 that include its DJ or live-band music nights and a welcome drink.
One current caveat: when we checked on November 3, 2026, Sky Garden said visitor capacity was temporarily reduced because one of its visitor lifts was out of service, and that some ticket holders might not get in at their booked time. Check the home page for notices before you go.
Paid Sky Garden options: early access and breakfast
You never need to pay to see Sky Garden. The paid tickets on Viator are for travelers who've missed the free release, or who want a set slot with breakfast included. Both options below are early access tickets with one pastry and one hot drink, valid for an hour from entry. They come with an audio guide app for exploring London afterward.
- Vox City International Ltd's early access ticket has the longer review record, but its reviews are mixed, so set your expectations accordingly. The listing says the outdoor terrace is closed during the visit, and all sales are final. Breakfast is served at the Sky Pod Bar.
- Dubai Tourism Agency's early access and breakfast ticket is new on Viator, with no reviews yet, and is sold by a reseller. Its cancellation policy shows a full refund up to 24 hours before, but the same listing also says tickets are nonrefundable, so check the terms at checkout before you rely on it.
Before you buy either, compare them with Sky Garden's own early morning tickets, sold at the door from £12.50. A paid Viator ticket's main advantage is that your slot is confirmed in advance.
The View from The Shard tickets
The View from The Shard is the paid option, and it gives you a lot for the money. There are indoor galleries on Levels 68 and 69, a Champagne bar on 69, and the open-air skydeck on Level 72. The Shard says the venue is fully accessible all the way up to Level 72. The entrance is on Joiner Street (SE1 9QU), about two minutes' walk from London Bridge station.
- Standard (13+): from £28 on the official site. Under-18s must be with an adult aged 18 or over with valid ID.
- Child (4–12): from £10, including a scoop of ice cream. Under-4s go free.
- Champagne: there's no separate champagne ticket for individual visitors on the official ticket page. You can buy a glass at the Level 69 bar. Mastercard holders can book a Priceless VIP ticket (from £45) that includes a glass of Moët & Chandon and a 30-minute guided tour.
- Flexible tickets: the official ticket page doesn't list a flexible ticket. You can enter up to 15 minutes after the time on your ticket; after that, a rebooking fee may apply.
Two official perks make The Shard easier to justify. First, there's no time limit: you can stay until closing. Second, the Shard's FAQ says all paid tickets include its View Guarantee. If you can't spot at least three of the listed landmarks, the Duty Manager will give you a free return voucher, valid for three months; you must claim it on the day, before you leave. If you book through a reseller, check that the guarantee applies to your ticket.
On Viator, the admission ticket from Golden Tours Gray Line London offers General and All Inclusive options with timed entry. Like the official tickets, it can't be refunded. Large bags and backpacks aren't allowed inside, so travel light.
Want the river too? The package from Royal Smart Tourism pairs Shard entry with a sightseeing cruise between Westminster and Greenwich, with a champagne upgrade on the premium option. Plan for 4–5 hours if you do both on one day. The listing gives Shard slots from 2pm to 9pm and cruise slots from 11:30am to 3:30pm, so the natural order is cruise first, then The Shard toward dusk. It has only a handful of reviews and all sales are final.
Sunset and winter visits
Sunset is the obvious time to go up either building, and in winter it comes early. On November 3, 2026, The Shard's home page listed sunset at 4:30pm, and it keeps getting earlier into December. The upside is that a late-afternoon slot gives you daylight, sunset and the city lights in one visit, without a late night.
- Sky Garden at sunset. Weekday ticket hours run to 6pm, so in November and December the sunset falls inside them. Pick the slot that starts just before sunset on your date. You only have an hour, so don't arrive too early.
- The Shard at sunset. With no time limit, The Shard is the easier sunset choice. Arrive in daylight, watch the sun go down from Level 72, and stay for the lights. Last entry is one hour before closing, and hours vary, so check the calendar for your date.
- Weather. London's winter cloud can sit low. Check the forecast on the morning of your visit. The Shard's View Guarantee is your safety net there; at Sky Garden, the terrace can close in bad weather, but the garden is under glass.
- Early risers. An early morning ticket (at the door, or with breakfast on Viator) gets you into Sky Garden before regular ticket hours start.

Other viewpoints nearby
Sky Garden and The Shard aren't the only ways to see London from above.
- The London Eye. A 30-minute rotation in a glass pod on the South Bank, lower than either tower but with Westminster and Big Ben close by. Our London Eye tickets guide compares standard, fast track and Champagne tickets.
- St Paul's Cathedral's Golden Gallery. 528 steps up the dome, with no lift, and an outdoor view over the City that's included in the cathedral's sightseeing ticket. See our St Paul's Cathedral tickets guide.
- Tower Bridge. The high-level walkways have glass floors over the river, a short walk from both towers. Our Tower Bridge tickets guide covers how entry works.
- From the river. A boat gives you the opposite angle: the skyline from below, with The Shard towering over the south bank. Our Thames cruises comparison covers sightseeing boats, dinner cruises and the river bus.
Planning several paid sights? The View from The Shard is one of the attractions on the Go City London Pass, which the Shard lists among its ticket types. Read is the London Pass worth it? before you buy one. Sky Garden is free, so it doesn't need a pass.

Frequently asked questions
Is Sky Garden really free?
Yes. Standard entry is free if you book a timed ticket on skygarden.london. Sky Garden also accepts free walk-ins daily during public hours, subject to availability. Paid options exist, such as early morning tickets at the door from £12.50 and breakfast packages from resellers, but you never need one just to get in.
How far ahead do Sky Garden tickets come out?
Free tickets are released every Monday morning, except bank holidays, three weeks in advance, for the whole of that week. Check the site on the Monday three weeks before your visit.
Can you visit Sky Garden without a booking?
Sometimes. Sky Garden says it accepts free walk-ins daily during public hours, subject to availability, so ask the team at the door. Evening walk-in tickets cost £15.50 at the door and need physical ID.
Is The Shard worth the money?
It is if you want the highest view in London, an open-air deck and time to linger. There's no time limit, and the View Guarantee gives you a free return if bad weather spoils the view. If you only want a good skyline photo and can book three weeks ahead, the free Sky Garden is better value.
Which is better at sunset, Sky Garden or The Shard?
The Shard, mainly because there's no time limit: you can arrive in daylight and stay for the lights. Sky Garden tickets last one hour, so pick a slot that starts just before sunset. In early November, sunset in London was around 4:30pm, and it gets earlier into December.
How long do you get at Sky Garden and The Shard?
Sky Garden public tickets are valid for one hour. At The View from The Shard there is no time restriction, so you can stay until closing.
